Comelec resumes voters’ registration for 2017 barangay, SK elections

CAGAYAN de Oro City--Commission on Elections (Comelec) resumed voters’ registration on November  7, 2016 for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections next year.

Based on Comelec Resolution No. 10166 promulgated on October 25, 2016, the Comelec will conduct the registration period from November 7, 2016 to April 29, 2017 including Saturdays and Holidays except on December 24 and 25, 2016 and April 13 and 14, 2017.

Kenneth P. Piloton, council member of the NAPC Youth and Students Sectoral Council and chairperson of the Youth Participation Committee encourages all the qualified youth and those who were not able to beat the deadline of the last voter’s registration to grab this opportunity to register before the elections next year.

“Applicants should not wait for the deadline of the registration for them not to experience long lines and other inconveniences,” he said.

So far, almost all Comelec offices have almost zero applicants for registration from November 7 until today November 12, 2016 for ages 15-30 years old,” Piloton added.

According to the estimate of the Comelec, there will be over one million more voters for the 2017 Barangay and SK elections than the 2016 presidential elections. Around 54 million voters registered for the May 2016 National and Local elections. Meanwhile, total of 3,095,187 registered for the Barangay and SK elections.

The law on the postponement of the 2016 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections was approved by President Duterte on October 15, 2016. (NAPC)
