ON THE EVE of the commemoration of EDSA’s uprising, health students occupy Espana, Manila to call for the resumption of Peace Talks between Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

Students from different medical schools, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), St. Luke’s, University of the East Ramon Magsaysay (UERM), University of the Philippines (UP), and University of Santo Tomas (UST), take a time off from their tight academic schedule to express their support in pursuing just and lasting peace. These medical students, with vigor of their youth, firmly believe that the socioeconomic reforms pursued in peace negotiations would secure a better future for the Filipino people and the next generation.

“The youth today takes a more proactive role on issues that matter to us like peace,” said Kevin Javier, medical student and co-convenor of Prescription for Peace.

In their clamor for a better healthcare system, students from the medical field strongly urge GRP, who cancelled the talks, to return to the peace negotiating table with the NDFP to agree upon, implement, and actualize substantial socioeconomic reforms. This involvement of the medical students signifies the role of the youth, despite the changing culture and varying interests, in the progress of social justice and equity in the country.

“More than three decades have passed since EDSA uprising but the upheavals of the youth and the Filipino people have not changed and will continue until the root causes of poverty and injustice which breeds war is not yet addressed,” added Javier.
